I am vegan and I will tell you right now it’s not easy being vegan in this world. Unless, like me, you are a committed, ethical vegan who will never, ever go back because it’s for the animals.
I am vegan because I am committed to animal’s having rights, and I am committed to doing what I can to help our planet survive, and still…it’s not easy.
Just like most of you, when I was growing up, everywhere I looked, everything I saw, told me it was “normal” to see flesh and carcasses in my day to day world. And nothing has changed. We are still being saturated every day with the outside world telling us what to eat, drink, do and if we try to be different it’s not easy. Not easy at all.
I am now, of course, repulsed when I open my newspaper and see numerous picture ads telling me to BarBQue animals, and to enjoy the smell of cooking meat. I am repulsed when I turn on the morning news shows and most of the TV commercials are about eating meat and animal products. I am repulsed when most of the cooking segments feature dead animals and dairy and eggs in the recipes.
And my morning just got started.
Every single holiday “celebrates” by eating dead animals, and one of the worst ones is Thanksgiving. I really hate the way America “gives thanks.” We “give thanks” by slaughtering about 50 million turkeys every year.
How is that being thankful? And more to the point…where is our compassion for these innocent animals when we are “celebrating” and “giving thanks?”
You see I am using a lot of quotation marks because, to me, this is the very opposite of celebration and thankfulness…breeding, torturing and then slaughtering animals who did absolutely nothing to us.
Do you like being told what to do? I don’t think anyone does and yet…we are all being told what to do every day because we are being told what to eat. We are being told how to eat and it is making us physically sick.
Once we start being emotionally sick about what we are doing we can begin to get better.
I am not judging. I am making an observation. Most people are omnivores. Not carnivores, not herbivores, most people are omnivores.
This means most people are not hindered by the cruel reality of eating animals and taking away their babies so we can use their milk.
We’ve all been brainwashed our entire lives. All of us…brainwashed.
So today “open your heart to compassion.” Compassion for animals, but also compassion for yourself, and your family, and friends. Don’t you think it’s time for all of us to get healthier?
